U-297 sunk while schnorkeling

<HTML>Hello all,
Just in case you didn\'t see it on the new Announcement Board, there\'s an interesting article about the discovery of U-297 at this link: [www.thescotsman.co.uk].
What I find particularly interesting about this story is that the Sunderland crew that sunk this u-boat supposedly spotted the wake of the schnorkel (there was no mention of radar) The crew then dropped D/Cs on the unsuspecting u-boat.
We had some previous discussions on vulnerability while schnorkeling, and I suppose this is at least one example of that vulnerability. Schnorkeling still seems far superior to being on the surface to charge batteries, but once spotted, a schnorkeling sub seems like a sitting duck.
I would be interested in other comments about this article. Rainer, you had mentioned once that a well trained crew could quickly close a valve to stop the inrush of water if the schnorkel mast were damaged below the head. Does the article\'s account of the sinking make sense to you?
Take care,
Tom </HTML>
