<HTML>It was not uncommon for a submerged sub to be spotted by their upraised periscope, or the shadow of a sub at shallow depths visible from the air. But these required a bit of luck and favorable (smooth) sea conditions. Scnorkels raised the same type of vulnerability issues.

The vulnerability of a schnorkel was reduced over the persiscope situation in one sense because persicope raising usually occured during action, ie: near escorting ships and airplanes. But it was heightened by the long time spent schnorkeling, and by the sub being blind during its use. More than a few schnorkeling subs were spotted by the visual wake of their schnorkel and sunk without any idea they were being tracked. But overall it was still a world better then having to surface..</HTML>
