<HTML>I have read that the vibration of diesel operation reduced the visual clarity of the persicope view. This, combined with the periscope being only one set of eyes instead of the 6+ of a normal bridge watch meant that the visual awareness of a U-boat against air or surface threats was greatly reduced over the situation of being on the surface.
Also, I understand that a persicope watch was not kept up continuously while schnorkeling, but instead infrequent sweeps were done, if at all. Many of the U-boats sunk schnorkeling did not have their periscopes up and were approached and caught totally unaware.
