<HTML>The U-boats with retrofitted snorkels obviously were not equipped to do proper air searches by periscope. However, if we assume a U-boat which is designed for snorkeling, then I am sure Zeiss could have come up with some large binocular periscopes for the job. Two of them constantly manned should have given a pretty good coverage. The XXI was designed in too much of a rush to permit such equipment. As for the Diesel vibration, they would have to go anyway as a sound proofing measure. Anti-vibration mountings for the Diesels were a necessity to get a reasonably quiet electroboat.
