This question has been asked many times over the years, why did
the TYPE XXI see no service...?
First, Hitler was NO Navy man and second Adm Doenitz was a Navy
man from WWI..!
It is without doubt that the German Navy was already badly behind
in its U-boat building programs by 1944, despite all the efforts made
in the shipyards with the new TYPE XXI. However, the error in the
shipyards was that they were allowed to continue the construction
of the old obsolescent TYPE VIIC, and \'diluted\' or mixed skilled and
semi-skilled labor was used to build the highly complex TYPE XXI
U-boats. Heavy Allied bombing of shipsyards also held up production,
and as a result only a few Type XXI boats were completed before
Germany then surrender in May 1945. It was all too late for the
TYPE XXI to do any real service with the Gernmany Navy at that
time.
