This is not second hand info,I sat down and interviewed him about his experiance. I have a little interest in WWII.
My grandfather was MIA fighting in Konigsberg,April,45
My uncle died as a POW in Soviet Georgia.
My other uncle (his brother) fought for the Americans in the Pacific.
My grandmothers brother (moms side)jumped on D-Day. 508th PIR, 82nd Airborne. He was killed in the Village of Beek, Holland Sept 20th,1944.
One more uncle in the 12th Armoured Division.
And last but not least my dads brother was in the Hitler Youth
Walter also dispelled the myth about the U-boat men being all volunteers. He said that they were working in fields and farms when a officer came up and asked for volunteers, Walter was not one of the men that stepped forward. The next day everyone that did not volunteer was worked until they dropped. He said that after a few days of that he was proud to "volunteer".
In regards to hitting the "floor" and getting stuck in Danzig, he was there and I was not. As for the salami, who would make something that stupid up? Walter admitted that the only reason he joined the Kreigsmarine was so he did not have "dig ditches" in the Arbeitsdeinst
