KTB= Kreigstagbuch, or War Diary. This is the diary of the patrol kept by the Capitain, and these were left at port on the completion of a mission. So it is often the case that a complete set of KTBs for a ship will exist except for the last one if it didn't return from that patrol. They are written in 'sailorspeak', full of abbreviations and technical notes that are complete jibberish to anyone who isn't accustomed to the naval language.

Most KTBs survived the war and are available through various public archives. I don't have the KTBs for U-444, but perhaps one of the regulars on this forum might, or can tell you how to access them (you will have a different process than me since I don't live in North America as I believe you do).
