Talking about failing brain, mine succumbs rather to italian wine...

But your Hoeltring Affair rings a bell. I just finished a study on U-185\'s sinking on 24 August 1943, which should be posted soon on Uboat.net. As you probably know, Hoeltring went down with U-185 in a very peculiar way, committing suicide in the forward torpedo compartment after having shot there a wounded and disabled crewmember of U-185 who was begging him to be killed rather than be left behind to drown.
At Jerry Mason\'s U-boat Archive.net, there is the complete interrogation report of the survivors of U-604 and U-185, which sheds some light on Hoeltring\'s caracter.

If you have contact with a survivor of U-604 who also survived the sinking of U-185 (or if you\'re interested in U-185\'s story :), I\'ll be glad to forward you my paper. Maybe your contact will be able to correct or give some new info on this event...
