<HTML>What about the \'Night of the Long Knives\'? The decimation of convoys SC 7 and HX 79 during the nights 18/19/20 Oct 1940 by, essentially, a single wolfpack seems, to me, to be the greatest U-boat action. When all was done, 21 ships were sunk and 2 damaged from SC7 and 12 were sunk and 1 damaged from HX 79. Amazing numbers considering that only six boats caused the destruction compared with the 45 boats involved in the battles with HX229 and SC122.
The boats and skippers involved read like a Who\'s Who of the U-bootwaffe. ( U 99-Kretschmer, U 48-Bleichrodt, U 123-Moehle, U 100-Schepke, U 101-Frauenheim, U 46-Endrass, U 47-Prien)
For some reason, this action has yet to be thoroughly covered as other U-boat actions have been.</HTML>
