<HTML>The first U-boat commissioned in 1906 was numbered U 1 (actually SMU 1) the second was U 2 and the third U 3 etc. when the UB and UC types were commissioned the same practice continued.. and in 1935 the same thing happened again U 1 - U 2 etc. After the war the Bundesmarine launched the U 1 followed by the U 2 etc.
They were not named after counties/towns/people or whatever -- just numbers. Those that did have a secondary (unofficial) name were because some cities and towns helped to finance them..
