RE: fresh air at night.!

In war-time, a U-boat was only on the surface at night too
recharge her batteries via her diesel engines. I do think this was
the only opportunity a U-boat crew can get some fresh air into the
boat.
It would of been very risky for any U-boat to surface during the day,
in enemy waters for fresh air only, unless the commander was sure
it would be safe for his crew and his boat to do so.
