Whilst researching `Teddy` Suhren of U-564 I came across the so-named `Teddy Suhren Marinekameradschaft` in Zweibrücken. Zweibrücken had what they describe as a `Patenschaft` with U-564 during WW2, which involved crew visits etc. My dictionary certainly connects the word `Paten-` with `sponsorship`, but I`d assumed that it was what we would call an `affiliation`, `link`, or even `twinning`, since the present Association describes itself as having a current `Patenschaft` with a French town.

Their website, BTW, is [home.t-online.de] where they also have quite a bit about their wartime connection - whatever it was ! - with U-564.

Good luck with the research; presumably there must have been lots of these wartime `Patenschafts`.
