<HTML>Hi Yuri,
The events I have described really happened. Mostly in the city of Berlin. I have seen the same Public TV specials as Fin. They have been on a number of times over a period of years. I have seen countless interviews with women who were raped by Russian solders during the occupation of Berlin and continuing for a long time after. Some were children when it happened and are still alive. Many described elderly ladies being raped, sometimes their relatives, sometimes neighbors, sometimes just acquaintances. What happened is well documented and widely known in the U.S., although I doubt it was publicized in the Soviet Union under Stalin (or any of the Communist countries for that matter).
For a first hand account see “A Time of Rape†by Inga L. Chesney (ISBN: 0-13-922013-5). She describes what she saw, what happened to her, and what happened to her family and friends. From the author’s preface:
“The Russian conquest of the city of Berlin in Germany 1945 was a nightmare. If I ask you to share this nightmare with me, it is not for the sake of sensationalism, but for the sake of asking questions and finding answers. Those that I found were paid for with the lives of millions.
All events in this book are true. I have described what happened to my family and me in our Berlin home during the short life of the Hitler’s Third Reich and for one year thereafter, as seen with the eyes of a seventeen-year-old girl – a girl who was suddenly confronted with the possibility that there might not be a future.â€
As to the looting, I have read many accounts of the Russian Army shipping back to Russia everything that could be removed from Berlin. Looting was widespread.
The numbers of suicides of German women Fin mentioned have been well publicized in this country too.
The raping and looting went on for some time and the Russian authorities did nothing to stop it.
Some would say they were justified. After what was done to their families by the German military and the SS they felt like they had a right to do such things. Many millions of Russian civilians were slaughtered during the German occupation. It was a no holds barred fight and there was no mercy given on either side. However, none of this changes what they did. They acted like pigs.
Stalin was a criminal at least equal to Hitler and perhaps worse. The number of innocent people who disappeared into the Gulag in the former Soviet Union rivals the number killed in the German concentration camps.
Regards,
Ken Dunn
