Remarkably, when I visited the boat 1 year ago, the guide told us that the tanks still were filled with fuel. He even mentioned that there might be valuables inside it. But, because they couldn’t find a economic way to get rid of the oil, which was considered chemical waste, they were still filled. Wouldn’t a oil company get all of it out within a short time? Remember, the U-534 was already since May 1996 in Birkenhead. Then, some other question arises, why should an oil company want all of the fuel, since a small part will be enough to determine it’s content?
But how can one rely on a guide, who mentions and insist that the type IX/40 was mainly used as Milchkuhe?
As far as I know, the U-534 was lifted, partly as mediastunt, and with the prospect of finding valuables. Mr Karsten Ree generated a lot of media attention, which was lucrative for him, being a publisher and a businessman.
Whatever the exact reason for lifting the vessel was, I am happy we are able to visit it nowadays. There is however to much tale forming around this boat, which was just a boat like many other U-Boats, not the mystique boat that was made out of it. The museum in Birkenhead thinks that it is still a mystery, and uses this to attract visitors.
Please share your opinion on this,
Kind regards,
