PTSD also came out of Vietnam. I suspect not only ALL vets have suffered from this thru history to some degree, but also WWII vets, but it was never identified until more recently. I remember my dad (an 8th USAAF vet) told me how he was attending a GI Bill class in Chicago, when there was an automobile back-fire or something outside the building, and many vets threw themselves onto the floor.
I also recall seeing an interview with one of the few survivors of HMS Hood---I wish I remembered his name right now, but I have it on tape, and will look it up tomorrow---who was in tears as he described the sinking of his ship by Bismarck. He is emotionally unable to attend cruises to the site to drop flowers into the sea to this day.
Men do their duty when it is called for. But it seems, this demand is too much of their humanity in the long run.
