Thanks for the info. You are right. I do remember seeing a documentary on I-52. I think it was National Geographic Explorer. They did find it and were actually looking for the gold which captured dispatches in DC list as being on the boat. No trace of gold was found though it could easily still be aboard the submarine. They were hoping it had spilled out along with some of the other stuff. I remember they brought up a shoe which they returned to Japan to be added to a WWII submarine memorial. They also raised a water proof Rising Sun flag over the sub. I believe the documentary said it was sunk by a homing torpedo of some sort dropped by aircraft....one of the first homing torpedos to be dropped by aircraft successfully.
According to the documentary, I-52 did survive the initial attack and was sunk sometime later--one or two days later. I don\'t know if that allows for the 400 mile
difference you mention though. Something we will have to look up I guess!
