<HTML>Hi Rainer, Rainer, Dave and Linn
Wynn has a few statements (which I assume came from a KT like:
“Two hits were made and sinking noises heardâ€, “one detonation and two explosions heardâ€, “three detonations were heard followed by sinking noises†for ships claimed but not confirmed.
He must have been attacking submerged then diving after firing his torpedoes as Linn says.
However, Wynn doesn’t mention any noises for a number of the claimed but not confirmed.
I know one of the torpedo problems caused premature detonations so perhaps those were some of the noises he heard. Could depth charges have been some of the noised he heard? I have no idea what sinking noises sound like and he must have not known either although he did have 12 confirmed sinkings.
Whatever the reason, he certainly does have a lot of claimed but not confirmed. I made a quick pass at “Axis Submarine Successes…†and it looks like there were 20 claimed but not confirmed for U-617 and 3 claimed but not confirmed for U-967.
Regards,
Ken Dunn
