<HTML>The U-505 crew was kept separated from the other prisoners in a secret isolated compound in Camp Ruston, Louisiana. When Red Cross officials visited, the U-505 crew were moved out of camp, hidden in barracks, registered as political prisoners not covered by the Geneva Conventions, etc. To make themselves known to the other POWs (mostly U-boat & Afrika Korps men), the U-505 crew made hydrogen balloons out of cellophane bread bags and cleaning chemicals and floated messages over the wire to the other prisoners saying \"The U-505 Lives!!!\". Once, some U-505 crewmen escaped out of their compound and replaced the US flag with a Reichkriegsfahne just to show everyone they hadn\'t lost their spirit. Hans Goebeler, U-505 crewman, originally intended to write two books: one on his wartime career (\"Steel Boats, Iron Hearts\") and another book on his prison camp experiences. Unfortunately, he died before work began on the second.</HTML>
