<HTML>Hi Frank

The MG-42 had an effective fire range of 1000 meters and on this distance almost no armour piercing effect. The MG was outranged by the 12,7 mm guns used in the most anti-submarine aircraft. So it was probably only used to support the main AA weapons like the 2cm and 3,7cm Flak. You get a psychological effect - on one side for the crew and on the pilot of the attacking plane, because he had to go through many more tracers from the u-boat.

The 2cm/65 C/38 Flak had a effective range of 4000-4500 meters and the firing rate was about 220 rounds (practical).
The quadruple-mounted 2cm Flak with a firing rate of 880 rounds per minute (75% high explosives and 25% armour piercing) was probably the best weapon to repulse an attack by a low flying aircraft.
