Hi Frank and Rainer,

>>For the 4000 -4500 m effective range you cite for the 2cm/65 C/38 AA guns, I\\\'m a bit surprised. I was trained on Oerlikon 20mm 57 and the maximum effective range was 2000 - 2500 m, the best engagement range being between 1000 and 1500 meters. <<

Marc,

The Automatic Gun Mk IV was a 20mm Oerlikon as previously used by the RN. I recall doing some basic training with it at HMS Cambridge when I was on a SSDC (Small Ship Defence Course ) back in the \'70\'s. The maximum effective ceiling of this gun was given as 1097m - 3600 feet. Best engagement range given between 950 - 1200m. It had a muzzle velocity of something like 2,500 feet per second.

As I was transferring from a Frigate to a \'sweeper at that time, I recall being told afterwards that you did not want to get into a situation with an enemy vessel that involved such close ranges - especially if she were bigger than you! However, as an AA gun it was pretty good. It was used in the Falklands, my ship having a set of twin 20mm\'s for AA defence

>>It the first time I hear of such ranges for 20mm guns. Where does your figures come from ?<<

Hmm, interesting! Info I have on the basic 2-cm Flak 38 and Flakvierling 38 AA guns states that their maximum effective ceiling was 2200m for both guns. I would hazard a guess and say that - depending on what type of round was being fired - that the engagement range must have been in the same 1000 - 1500m area.

Hope this helps!

Aye,

John
