<HTML>It was an unwritten rule that only the commander on board a U-boat could wear a white cap , this was done to identify the captain from all others. Technically the other officers on board could have worn a white cap also during the summer months but they observed this unwritten rule. If one was to be a stickler for the letter of the law the white cap in say October would be \"out of uniform \" , but with U-boat crews much lee-way was given in their dress code . I am sure for things like meeting Hitler they wore the correct hat and uniform !!</HTML>
