I was also doing some diesel mechanics back then and if I recall correctlly, one advantage of the 2-cycle was weight. You get more power out of a 2-cycle than an equivelent sized 4-cycle because you have twice as many power cycles. There are some losses from incomplete venting of exhaust gases and parasite losses from blowers. For a sub, a smaller size and weight would be an important consideration. The differences in fuel use must not be great or truckers and railroad locomotives would not have used them.</HTML>
