<HTML>Hi SK,
The two stokes can be a little dirty, but they\'ve been able to pass muster in all the locations I\'ve lived. I think the regulations on heavy duty diesels vary a little bit from state to state. In Colorado, the only thing required of a heavy duty diesel was that it pass an opacity test. I worked on a fleet of firetrucks that were exempt from this regulation since they were emergency vehicles, but we tested them anyway. They all ran 2-stroke Detroits and all of them passed the test with ease. I feel like the GM engineers did a good job of improving the design as it aged. One of the big advances was better fuel injectors that were sized properly to a particular horsepower rating. They even introduced computer controlled injectors that were much more precise in their fuel delivery. Of course, any good \'Jimmy\' mechanic could soup-up your Detroit with larger injectors. They were great for power, but ruined fuel economy, caused clouds of black smoke, and the higher combustion pressures wore out the rings and liners in no time.
Regards,
Tom </HTML>
