<HTML>\">Nr. 2 Diesel is running about 1/2 the price it is in EU, with 89 Octane petrol at 2/3 the price......We\'re catching up with you.....<\" Actually the fuel price in Europe is low in terms of $ at the moment because of the high $ exchange rate vs. the Euro. Gasoline costs more like $ 4/gal. I presume your 2/3 was based on $3 /gal. I recall that gasoline in some parts of the US has hit $2 /gal.
The real killer over here is taxes. As much as ¾ of the gasoline price is taxes, but in some countries Diesel attracts a significantly lower tax. So unless Bush has raised the gasoline tax, you are not catching up in terms of \"real\" local prices. It only looks that way because the price in the US is up due to market forces and the $ price in Europe is down a bit because of the exchange rate. This also increases the net price of the fuel, but since the taxes are so high, the sales price actually goes down in $ due to the exchange rate. If you take the original $ to Euro exchange rate, then the price of Diesel goes up to $3.80 /gal. And gasoline is more like $ 5 /gal.
