Re-read what I said about the Type IX, and I\'ll think you\'ll find we are in agreement. I don\'t dispute the IX\'s toughness, just its probability of survival in combat.
I said that the Type VII\'s maneuverability served it well; the Type VII proved far more survivable than the Type IX in the tough battles of the North Atlantic. They key was maenuverability, the ability to avoid punishment, not absorb it.
The key is that survivability is different than toughness. The larger and clumsier Type IX\'s had all too many occasions to demonstrate their resistance to damage. Losses of Type IX in the North Altantic were disproportionately large, and they had to be withdrawn from N Atlantic service. The nimbler VII\'s were less likely to get caught. So the IX\'s were less survivable, with survivability defined as including all aspects of the design, including maneuverability, not just the ability to absorb damage. </HTML>
