<HTML>By the way, usually a ship (no matter the type) is referred to in German as \"she\" (sie, or with the definite article, die) as we do in English. I think Yingvi is on the right track. It was out of respect for Reichskanzler Bismarck (or, maybe, just the fact that the namesake of the battleship was a male) that the commander consistently referred to the vessel with a male pronoun (er) and definite article (der).</HTML>
