If you read german, then the account of Herbert Plottke will give you some good info on the first U-boat offensive against South Africa. He was Bootsmannsmaat on U-172, one of the Eisbär-Gruppe boats to reach South African waters at the end of September 1942.
From 8 October 1942, together with U-68 KK Merten, U-159 KptLt Witte and U-509 KK Poske, U-172 Kptlt Emmermann attacked shipping next to The Cape.
