<HTML>Boy, we\\\'re getting sensitive. Jap is a shortened version of Japanese and is about as offensive as people calling me \\\"Steve\\\" instead of my proper name of \\\"Stephen\\\" This is as opposed to the word \\\"Gaigen\\\" which the Japanese use for all foreigners, which translates as barbarian.
Krauts was a name based on the German love of sourkraut. Judging from some of the posts on this board, a better name might have been \\\"Becks\\\" ;-). Compare this to the standard American nickname of Yankee. Ignoring for the moment the insult that any Son of the South would take at being called Yankee, the name comes from a Dutch insult to the English settlers, who called them \\\"John Cheese\\\" . Kind of a silly insult and frankly, calling an enemy \\\"shreaded, pickeled cabbage\\\" is kind of weak.
I worry a lot more about people forgetting just what the NAZI\\\'s and the Imperial Japanese were than someone being upset about mild names for them. Political Correctness is too often used to hide the truth.</HTML>
