U-33

<HTML>Yesterday, I spoke to a Scotsman who was present {but did not participate in} the sinking of the U-33 on 12 February 1940 in the Firth of Clyde. I\'m interested to know the name and details of the French merchant ship U-33 apparent sunk when it evaded the anti-submarine nets in the Firth of Clyde. The man who related the story said for many years the masts of the French merchant were visible above the water.

Additionally, he stated that the locals buried the dead German seamen, in unmarked graves in \"a nearby cemetary\" {presumably in Greenock} at night. I\'d like to know if anyone has any details on whether or not the German seamen were exhumed and returned to Germany, and if there is a crew list somewhere for the U-33 during its wartime service. </HTML>
