<HTML>S. Chris Kelly,
from what can be seen on this site Conning Tower members page on U-33, her last sinking was the British tanker Inverdargle ( 9\'456 brt) on 16 January 1940.
From what is told in Kenneth Wynn\'s book, U-33 left for a minelaying operation in the Clyde on 5 Fbruary 1940. Whilst attempting to lay mines off the southern tip of the Island of Arran, U-33 was attacked on the 12th by the minesweeper HMS Gleaner (Lt Cdr H P Price) and sunk with depth charges. 23 men including von Dresky, were lost and 17 others were captured.

Jak P Mallmann Showell devotes some 10 pages on the sinking of U-33 and publishes a wealth of pictures from U-33, most of them from the U-Boot Archiv\'s extensive collection in Cuxhaven. To my knowledge, it is also the best place where to ask for a list of the crew (written enquiry only).

None of those sources mention that U-33 did sink a French freighter in the Clyde, so this part of the story you heard remains a mystery.
