<HTML>One difference with the US Navy, however, is that submarines were numbered sequentially, starting with USS Holland (S-1), and continuing to the present. The numbers still haven\'t reached the total Germany built during World War II.
German U-boat numbers were assigned in blocks, with many unbuilt, and number ranges up into the 4000s, though Dönitz\'s Memoirs indicate that only 1170 were actually built and only 863 became operational. If every boat in every number series had actually been built and commissioned, the only way to get supplies across the Atlantic would have been by aeroplane, since as many as 800 ~ 1000 could have been on station at any given time. Obviously, that didn\'t happen.
