You ask for \"detailed information on the CHATHAM\". Capt. Arthur R. Moore in his \"A Careless Word ... A Needless Sinking\" writes as follows:
\"SS CHATHAM
Company: Merchants and Miners Transportation Co., Baltimore MD
Master: Edward Anderson
Gross Tons: 5649
Built: 1926 @ Newport News VA
Dimensions: 351\' x 52\' x 16\'
The passenger ship SS CHATHAM was torpedoed by the German submarine U-517 (Hartwig) at 1146 GCT, August 27, 1942 in Belle Isle Strait (51-50 North/ 55-45 West) while en route from Sydney, Nova Scotia to Greenland with a cargo of foodstuffs and 428 passengers in Convoy SG-6. On board the CHATHAM were 106 merchant crew, and 28 Naval Armed Guard. Of these numbers, 7 crew members and 7 passengers were lost.
At 0846 local time, a torpedo struck the CHATHAM on the starboard side slightly forward of amidships in the vicinity of the boiler room. The explosion blew the boilers up through the deck. The force of the explosion ruptured all 5 decks up to the boat deck. All the transverse bulkheads in this area were destroyed. The explosion also released acrid, choking fumes throughout the dining room and crews quarters. The ship listed to starboard immediately, held an even trim for about 30 minutes and then sank.
The ship\'s complement abandoned ship in an orderly fashion in lifeboats and rafts. The majority of the survivors reached shore in the lifeboats and rafts. Others were picked up by the USCGC MOJAVE and the USS BERNADOU (DD-153) and landed at Sydney and Argentia, and at Forteau Bay, Newfoundland. These ships were escorting the CHATHAM.
The U-517 (Hartwig) was sunk southwest of of Iceland by planes from HMS VICTORIOUS on November 21, 1942.\"
Cordially.
