<HTML>As far as the Italian Subs being effective commerce raiders, what I meant was they were more effective at this than the Japanese. While Doenitz does say the Italians were not very effective when it came to convoys, I have read that he found them farely effective when it came to operating alone in coastal waters or in areas like the Carribean. I have also read rather complimentary statements by Doenitz about the Italian submarine force. Obviously they were no where near as good as the Germans or Americans for instance, but they were one of the more effective forces the Italians had. Certainly, given the size of their submarine fleet at the beginning of the war, they could have done a lot better. In any case, my point was they were better trained as commerce raider and more effective at that than the Japanese.
