<HTML>Hello All:
I have just returned home from a five day USS Guadalcanal crew reunion held in Norfolk, VA which was the ships homeport during the war. We all seem to be getting a little \"grayer\". Admiral Trosino attended ( he was the Guadalcanal\'s engineering officer and was instrumental in U-505\'s salvage at sea following the capture) and he is 94 now.
Kieth Gill, curator for U-505 at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, spoke to us and briefed us on the museums plans for U-505. The sub is badly in need of repair of damage caused by some 55 years of exposure to the weather. It continues to be the most popular exhibit at the museum drawing visitors from all over the world.
The museum has budgeted $23,500,000 US to repair the damage to the sub and the construction of an enclosure which will completely cover the sub. The enclosure is designed to resemble a drydock in which the sub will rest. There will be a surrounding walkway sightly above deck level so visitors can view the deck, guns, and conning tower at eyelevel as well as walk through the interior. The whole will be covered over by a glass roof. The structure will also contain a theater and other static displays. All this is to be paid for by a combination of revenues from admissions, contributions. and grants. A little over half the required amount has been raised and they expect completion of the exhibit within the next five years.
