Hi.
According to the book Operation Drumbeat the operation was only the initial attack conducted by 5 u-boats against the east coast of the U.S. If this is correct then Hardegan was the most successful.
If you take the operation to include all the follow up patrols by U-boats including those into the Gulf Of Mexico then I think that Rostin in U-158 was the most successful with 12-13 ships sunk during May - June 1942 for over 60,000 tons. The u158 was sunk on its return by aircraft 2 days after Rostin had been awarded the Knights Cross. If your talking about just off the eastern seaboard then maybe Hardegan was probably the top scorer though some of his sinking claims are disputed. Lehmann Willenbroch in U-96 had a very successful patrol as did Erich Topp in U-552, though I don\'t have their confirmed scores immediately available. I did read in Blair\'s U-Boat war vol.1 that a uboat scored higher than Hardegan but I just can not remember the number or name of the commander. I will check it out for you and post it next week.
