<HTML>It is a WW1 German U-boat, which used mercury for trimming. After the demonstrative Scapa Flow scuttling in 1919, the Powers decided that all the German Navy hardware had to be scuttled according to Versailles peace terms but some items could to be kept as replacement of battle losses or exibits by the winners (to raise money for the Red Cross). Later they were used as gunnery targets. In the twenties people still belived they had just overcamed the \"last\" and not just the \"latest\" World War.</HTML>
