UC-97 became probably the only German submarine sunk within the continental United States. One of five U-boats turned over to the U.S. Navy for post-war study, she toured the Great Lakes as part of a Victory Bond drive, then was sunk (on purpose) in Lake Michigan a few miles east of Chicago. \"
