<HTML>Guys,

The official manual used by commanders was the \"Handbuch der Schiffstypenkunde für die Kriegsmarine.\"

Paul\'s Militaria site at [indigo.ie] has a photograph of one of these manuals. Here\'s his description of it:

U-boat Commander\'s Enemy Ship Identification and Targetting Guide

This is what was known as a \'U-boat hunting book\', and this one is marked as part of the inventory of U-291 (see the red Kriegsmarine inventory stamp above left).

This book is a u-boat commanders guide to the shape and appearance of enemy vessels. It covers the major naval vessels of most of the Allied countries and is complete with targetting information. The book is heavily annotated and contains updates where new information has become available or where an enemy ship has been sunk (such as the British battleship \'Barham\', torpedoed and sunk by OL Lemp in December 1939, which is neatly crossed out in red in the book).

Regards.
