<HTML>Guys,
Yeah, okay you got me!
Probably sampled the best - and worst - of alcaholic drinks throughout the world but the absolutely best rememered was Irish Pochin ( ? Someone tell me how to spell it! )
I was on a Ton class sweeper which did a courtesy visit to Eire - Southern Ireland - and the port I recall best was Foynes, which is up the Shannon on the Atlantic Coast. We had a 48 hour over stay in port and after the usual \'don\'t annoy the locals, behave like ambassadors\' speel, took a wad of cash and went ashore. First port of call was the local pub which was just outside the jetty gates. One of only three in the village it seemed the place to go. Sailors being sailors we made it the only place we drabk at!
Lots of fresh Guiness later we were requested by the local Gardai - police officer - to accompany him to a friends house where he would guarentee us a good time. It was - as the house was hosting a party with a full Irish folk band in swing and some strange colourless liquid being given to everyone with a wink and a smile.
Oh God....If you have ever tasted illicit, home made booze, then Irish Pochin must rank as rocket fuel! It is made from potato skins and is illegal - causes blindness I was told, though I didn\'t see any white sticks! :-)
Upshot of it was that, a day and a bit later, an RN vessel left the Irish Republic with 90% of her crew seriously under the weather! Headcahes, the shakes and very frequent visits to the heads failed to shift the long lasting effects of this potent brew - and for the first time in my life I was copiously and violently seasick in a mere force 4 blow -
- as were the rest of the crew!
Thankfully we did not have to work up on that trip back to Pompey!
It remains my most vivid drinking memory. Trust me, it would floor even the most seasoned of drinkers in this forum! I will never touch a drop again!
Aye,
