Occasionally, during the two months in 1942 when I was a prisoner aboard the raider MICHEL and the supply vessel UCKERMARK each of us was issued a single bottle of beer. I removed a label from one empty and managed to save it throughout the war. It is oval shaped, and around the top is printed Holsten-Brauerei. In the center is a very detailed drawing of a knight in armor, astride as black horse. On a banner near the bottom are the words Holsten-Pilsner. Under that in a small circle is another drawing of a knight on a horse, which closely resembles the label on a modern day bottle of Holsten Bier. The only other words are Hamburg-Altona and Made in Germany.

If that is what the crews in the surface ships were drinking, chances are the U-boat people had the same.
