<HTML>Evening Rainer and the rest of the crew,
Sorry to be straggling by the clock but have just arrived home to read the posts. My comments about the Convoy Form A1 are about the Convoy layout which is contained in the admiralty records held at the UK Public Records Office. Each convoy was built up on a grid, 12 columns
wide and 5 columns deep. On the form each ship is allocated a sailing position the columns were numbered 01 to 12 across or less if required, and each columnwas numbered 11 to 15 or 21 to 25 deep. The rear Starboard vessel would sail in position 125. Some documents say that 9 columns was the maximum and that the 10th column would be allocated as 9A and the 11th column as 9b and so on but this is not so on many of the Con.Form A1 which exist, as in the case of ON166 where the grid is laid out as below:-
01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 10 11 12 Columns
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
11 21 31 41 51 61 71 81 91 101 111 121
12 22 32 42 52 62 72 82 92 102 112 122
13 23 33 43 53 63 73 83 93 103 113 123 SHIP POSITIONS
14 24 34 44 54 64 74 84 94 104 114 124
15 25 35 45 55 65 75 85 95 105 115 125
Each box in the grid contains the details of :- Ships Name, Tonnage, Nationality,
Type of Ship, Mast Head height and if it is Commodore or Vice-Commodore of the convoy, also its signalling capabilities e.g. Radio Telephone, Coloured Lights,
Direction Finding Etc. I hope this clarifies the use of the Convoy Form.
Regards Ted A.</HTML>
