Jeff, I seem to remember that Buchheim in the book \"Das Boot\" describes more or less the same things you mention; I don\'t just now recall the pages, but it\'s when he describes the time he tried his hand at a bridge watch himself and realizes how hard it is.
I think he also says something about moving the binoculars in a quarter of a circle, then check without binoculars, and repeat the whole thing.
