In WWI the germans operated the following Merchant U-Boats:
U Deutschland / U 200
After 2 merchant trips (to USA) refitted to \'normal\' sub U 155
After WWI to England
U Bremen
Sunk on first merchant trip.
These subs could transport +/- 800 BRT of goods.
Many other merchant project where started/cancelled. But as far as I know only the 2 above ever operated as merchant U-Boats.

In WWII the Germans operated submarine suppliers and torpedo transports, which might also be regarded as freighters.
