By now my previous posts in this thread should have filtered down to you as well. Let me try again: You may address me simply as Rainer or Mr. Bruns. As a former military man, you might as well readopt civilian curtesies. Most of your life will be spent outside the military, so get with it.
If not military curtesies are also acceptable, i.e. when in doubt call them \'Sir\'. And a Captain in the Merchant Marines (retired or not) rates a \'Sir\' in anyone\'s handbook on military etiquette. I would have loved to have seen the reaction of your commanding officer, when you addressed him solely by his last name. What a crock!
