Generally speaking I think the boat resembles a type XIV u-boat.

But you are right: The weapon in the foredeck should be a 37mm gun but in the painting it is too big, its barrel too long, and looks like more to a 105mm gun.

In the other hand, the outer hull water draining holes pattern, and the raked upper front part of the conning tower seems to be the correct ones for a XIV type.
Due to the perspective angle the deck slots drawing and the ship´s beam cannot be seen clearly.
