early on in the building of the Volksmarine they planned to add Uboats, but that was nixed. Do not know, if their paternalistic friends further East did not think this was such a hot idea or if it was merely because of budget restrains. They had already started an Uboat training facilityin the late fifties, when everything was stopped and the trainees reassigned. No boats were built or bought. - Just got this info by letter last week.
