<HTML>Hi JohnV
I don\'t think that Hitler had high respect for the U-boat men.. He choosed Doenitz as his successor, because all of his \"friends\" had left him alone in Berlin.
The planned representative Göring (commander-in-chief of the Luftwaffe) fled from Berlin and Hitler called him a traitor. He was disappointed by all peoples around him and had written this in his testament.
In the last two years of the war, nobody had told Hitler the truth about the situation. But in April 1945 the Soviets had surrounded Berlin. He thought the Luftwaffe, the Wehrmacht, the SS and the surface navy had failed.. the U-boat arm was the only part of the armed forces, which was offensive at the end of the war.
But perhaps it was Hitlers fault, that the U-boat arm had no success in cutting the lifelines of Britain. He was sending the U-boats into the mediterranean and kept them in Norway in the most critical time, when the boats where needed on the main battlefield for U-boats... the North Atlantic.
Regards
