<HTML>If Hitler had waited for the 1000 U-Boats Doenitz wanted before hostilities began, the battle of the Atlantic might have turned out different. As it turns out, the \"little corporal\" had an infantry mind, and a small one at that. He began the Battle of the Atlantic with 300 boats. Just as he insisted all his bombers have dive bombing capabilities. This showed his preoccupation with ground forces. He had no large strategic bombers to hit Russian industry on the other side of the Urals. If he had listened to Galland and even Goering, that campaign might have turned out differently as well. He had nothing to touch these new factories, or troop replacements coming from these areas. He even refused drop tanks for ME-109\'s. They could linger over England for only 15 minutes before heading for home due to fuel capacity. He also refused \"the assault rifle\" stating that soldiers tend to aim better with the Mauser bolt action. When they were produced without his knowledge and someone used the term \"assault rifle\" in a meeting he went crazy. They had to use the term \"machine gun.\" The soldiers wanted more of these prototype fine weapons. Thank God for our men they didn\'t get them.

I remember reading here a comment one time that Hitler probably never set a foot on a U-boat. Unfortunately, as I found out tonight, we can not claim to be unfouled by the man. Was looking through a book on te U-bootwaffe tonight. Osprey\\\'s Elite Series, #60 \\\"U-Boat Crews 1914-1945 by G. Williamson and D. Pavlovic. On page 10 there is a pic of the Evil One on a tour of a Type I or II prior to 1936.(Something about the design of the officer\\\'s caps being pre-36.) tjk</HTML>
