<HTML>Sean,
I can add to your Newcastle story with some other interesting facts. In 1942 (the exact dates escape me) the Japanese shelled Sydney,NSW,Australia as well. From what I gather 5 or 6 shells landed in the South Head/Rose Bay area of Sydney. Once again they did little damage and no casualties were incurred. I have also read of a Japanese recce aircraft flying over Sydney as well. I believe this was from the I 25 (dont quote me on that!). This sub also cruised the eastern seaboard doing aerial recce\'s of Melbourne and Hobart! Apparently everyone was quite surprised by it all and forgot to shoot at them!
As a sidelight U862 tried to sink a Greek cargo ship, the Ilisos, by gunnery near Kangaroo Island in Dec.1944. The greek ship returned fire from its gun and forced the UBoat to break off the contact. The story is told in \'U Boat far from Home\' by David Stevens.

Cheers</HTML>
