<HTML>Hi Dave
As far as I know there was no IFF (Identifying Friend or Foe) devices fitted in
allied subs during WWII.
They used both identification challenges, and safety exclusion areas/corridors systems. When the several friendly fire cases occurred (There were also several near-miss cases), the most common cause were navigation mistakes that carried the attacked sub into the safety exclusion area/corridor.
In the case of friendly aircraft-submarine attack there were no time enough to use
visual recognition signals. The more advisable manoeuver for the sub in these cases was a fast evasive action( ie. crash dive).

\"Polish submarine \"Jastrzab\" mistakenly attacked by Norwegian destroyer \"St. Albans\" and British minesweeper \"Seagul\". After first attack \"Jastrzab\" was forced to surface, where allied escorts open fire to the Polish submarine. Shortly afterwards ship sunk in position 71-30N 12-32E, with lost of 5 men.\"

After a quick research these are the allied submarines sunk by friendly fire I´ve found:

British HMS Unbeaten(by aircraft)
British HMS P514 (by ship)
American USS Seawolf (by ship and aircraft)
American USS Triton? (by aircraft)
Dutch O13? (by Polish sub Wilk)
Polish ORP Jastrzab (by ships)
